Syntax without functional categories

چکیده

This paper argues against the notion 'functional category' (a kind of word-class) while accepting that individual words may be described as 'function' words or 'content' words. It focuses on the two least controversial examples of functional categories — 'determiner' and 'complementiser' — and argues that neither of these categories is needed; and if this conclusion is correct, there is even less independent support for the more abstract functional categories like 'Inflection' and its subtypes. There is no word-class of 'determiners', because determiners are simply 'transitive' pronouns; nor do 'complementisers' comprise a word-class because the standard complementisers are all different from each other. 1 Overview and terminology Do functional categories really exist? In this paper I shall suggest that they do not, so I should start with a little historical background. Recent Chomskian theory assumes a fundamental distinction between two kinds of syntactic categories, 'substantive' and 'functional', which plays a central role both in the theory and in the practice of transformational grammar: Virtually all items of the lexicon belong to the substantive categories, which we will take to be noun, verb, adjective and particle, ... The other categories we will call functional (tense, complementizer, etc.), ... (Chomsky 1995:6). This division continues a long historical tradition. For at least decades, and maybe

The production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition

This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...

A unified analysis of classifiers and reduplication across nominal and verbal domains∗

This paper discusses the use of classifiers and reduplication in Cantonese. I propose a unified account for the syntax-semantics of both nouns and verbs, based on two functional layers: individuation and quantification. I demonstrate an abstract semantics that handles the interaction between classifiers and reduplication without reference to syntactic categories. Quantification (reduplication) ...

Semantical Analysis of Higher-Order Abstract Syntax

It is the aim of this paper to advocate the use of functor categories as a semantic foundation of higher-order abstract syntax (HOAS). By way of example, we will show how functor categories can be used for at least the following applications: relating first-order and higher-order abstract syntax (proofs of adequacy) without using reduction rules, justifying induction principles and other axioms...

Simulating the Child ' S Acquisition of the Lexicon and Syntax

This paper describes the theory and implementation of Babel, a system which explores the hypothesis that much of the diierences in the world's languages may be characterized by the inventory and properties of the lexical items and functional categories of those languages. The structure of Babel assumes that functional categories are originally lacking in a child's syntax, and are acquired throu...

Specifying Imp(g) Using Asf+sdf: a Case Study

IMP(G) is a language based on distributive categories which allows to deene uniformly classes of computable function arising from a basic set. The syntax of IMP(G) has been deened mathematically in terms of abstract syntax, so that any implementation has to face with a number of choices, ambiguities and polymorphisms of the categorical notation. In this paper we summarize the goals attained usi...
